LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 2 University of California women’s rowing team has garnered four All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) accolades. Tonya Khounani and Alana Zaleski earned first team honors, while Evelyn Brady and Malia Mizuno were named to the second team. WIRA announced its recipients on Friday, and selections are determined based on the teams’ performances at the WIRA Championships.

“I am very excited for these four seniors to be recognized for their efforts this past WIRA,” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “Tonya and Alana crushed it on the ends of the V8, Evie brought so much power to the V4, and Malia was the rhythm and spirit the 2V8. This is an exceptional class of seniors and to get a chance to honor them at the WIRA championships is special. Congrats to all of them!”

All four seniors helped their boats to runner-up finishes at the WIRA Championships from April 26-27. With Khounani in the eighth seat and Zaleski in the first seat, the Varsity 8 claimed second place in the DII/DIII/Club grand final. With their time of 6:47.670, the Tritons only trailed Central Oklahoma (6:46.001).

It was a similar story for the Varsity 4, who earned second in their DII/DIII/Club grand final behind Central Oklahoma (7:28.341) as well. Brady, in the third seat, helped the Tritons cross the finish line at the 7:37.671 mark.

The Second Varsity 8 crew also turned in a runner-up finish in their DII/DIII/Club grand final. Mizuno assisted the Tritons to a time of 7:07.587, trailing only Seattle Pacific (7:02.849).

Next up, team selections for the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships will be revealed during an online selection show on May 20. The selection show link will be posted here.
