No. 3 Tritons Head to Petite Finals After Pair of Third Place Finishes at NCAA Championships

UC San Diego

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 3 University of California San Diego women’s rowing team competed in the repechages of the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. Both the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews recorded third-place finishes, moving on to tomorrow’s petite finals.

It was a tight race early on in the Varsity 8 repechage. At the 500-meter mark, UC San Diego, Florida Tech, Seattle Pacific, and Jefferson were all within three seconds of each other. By the halfway point though, Jefferson slowed significantly while UC San Diego and Seattle Pacific were neck and neck, trailing Florida Tech.

Florida Tech extended its lead as it neared the finish line, while UC San Diego battled Seattle Pacific for second. In the end, the Tritons were edged by Seattle Pacific by less than a second, turning in a time of 7:10.886 for third place.

In the Varsity 4 repechage, UC San Diego was pitted against Seattle Pacific and Jefferson once again, as well as Western Washington. Western Washington pulled out to an early lead that it would preserve throughout the race.

UC San Diego, Seattle Pacific, and Jefferson all vied for the second-place spot initially, but eventually Jefferson began to fade and Seattle Pacific took a hold on second in the latter half of the race. UC San Diego ultimately crossed the finish line at 8:22.988, taking third.

Tomorrow, both Triton crews will race in the petite finals. The Varsity 4 petite final is slated to begin at 9:24 a.m., while the Varsity 8 will compete at 9:48 a.m.
