UC San Diego Adds Pair of Assistant Coaches Ahead of Upcoming Season
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women’s rowing team has welcomed two new assistant coaches to its staff for the upcoming season. Marites Exume and Charlotte Smith will be helping the program.
“I am very pleased to have both Marites and Charlotte on board!” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “Marites has been a volunteer with the novice program for the last two years and brings a patient and positive approach to the training and development of new rowers. She creates a great learning environment and I am looking forward to seeing what she can do with this year’s novice group!
“Charlotte was a very successful Division I rower at George Washington and brings a wealth of highly competitive rowing experience to our program. She brings a lot of intensity and determination which will be great assets to this year’s varsity team.”
In addition to her experience volunteering with the Tritons the past two years, Exume also coached for San Diego-based ZLAC Rowing Club Ltd. from 2017-19. She worked with high school and adult programs and instructed athletes on rowing strokes, boat handling, and safety.
Exume, who is a San Diego native, competed with the Puget Sound rowing team. She was a four-year letter winner and competed with the 2015 Northwest Conference (NWC) Championship-winning crew. Exume and her teammates went on to compete at the NCAA DIII National Championships that season. In Exume's final year with the Loggers, she was named to the All-NWC team.
Smith most recently served as an assistant coach for Dedham, Mass. based Dexter Southfield Boat Club, where she developed male and female athletes of all skill levels. Before that, she began her coaching career with Community Rowing in Boston after serving as a strength and conditioning coach at The School Without Walls in Washington D.C.
Smith rowed for George Washington from 2013-17. Among Smith’s accolades were a First Team All-Conference nod and Team MVP award. She also served as her squad’s social chair, organizing team events such as community service opportunities.
