Kelvin Uribe and Matt Merrill Named to United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Teams

UC San Diego

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of California San Diego men's soccer upperclassmen Kelvin Uribe and Matt Merrill were chosen Monday to United Soccer Coaches All-West Region teams.

Uribe, a junior center back out of Lake Forest (El Toro HS), was one of three defenders on the 11-player second team. Merrill, a fifth-year senior holding central midfielder from Mission Viejo (Santa Margarita Catholic HS), was one of three midfielders on the 11-player third team. Both are first-time All-West Region honorees. The duo was earlier selected to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Second Team.

Uribe and Merrill started all 16 games they participated in during the 2018 campaign, each missing three matches due to injury. Uribe played every minute of those 16 contests, anchoring six shutouts. Merrill's first collegiate goal was the stunning 80th-minute game-winner from 25 yards in a come-from-behind, 2-1 home decision over Cal State Monterey Bay in the Tritons' CCAA opener back on Sept. 14. He was in the middle of seven of the club's eight clean sheets this past year.

Merrill ends his career with 47 starts among 51 games played. He will graduate next month with a degree in international studies-international business. Uribe, also an international business major, will return for one more season in Triton colors.

UC San Diego saw another solid year concluded prematurely, by back-to-back 2-0 losses at rival Chico State in its regular-season finale and first round of the CCAA Tournament. The Tritons, despite a 13-4-2 overall record and big wins over Pacific West Conference champion Azusa Pacific and CCAA Tournament champion Cal State LA, did not make the 38-team field for the NCAA Championship. UC San Diego was 7-3-2 in the CCAA, tying for fifth place. The Tritons qualified for a program-best sixth consecutive CCAA Tournament.
