Team Effort Leads to Senior Day Shutout Win

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California men’s soccer team scored three goals in a seven minute span early in the first half Sunday, as the Tritons blanked visiting Stanislaus State, 5-0, on Senior Day at Triton Soccer Stadium. It was the second straight shutout for UC San Diego (11-3 overall, 6-2 CCAA), and the fourth consecutive Tritons victory.

UC San Diego got the scoring started in the 14th minute, when junior Brett Jones found classmate Jonathan Sabouri, who buried his fifth goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, Jones notched his team-leading tenth goal in 2019, off an impressive pass from redshirt senior Andy Sartor. Three minutes later, Sabouri scored again – this time off a feed from redshirt sophomore Oliver Nelson – to give the home team a three-goal cushion, a lead that held up for the duration of the half.

In the second period, the Tritons scored twice more. Redshirt sophomore Max Gonda took advantage of a deflection to pick up his second goal of the season, an unassisted strike in the 79th minute. In the 90th minute, the Tritons added another goal, when sophomore Nick Cirrito found the back of the net on a penalty kick.

The UC San Diego back line held strong throughout the match, allowing the Warriors (3-10, 0-8)  just five shot attempts on the day. Tritons goalkeeper Pedro Enciso registered a pair of saves, notching his seventh shutout of the season.

The Tritons return to the pitch Wednesday night as they host Cal State San Marcos at 7 p.m. inside Triton Soccer Stadium in the final regular season home match.
