Tritons Blank CSU San Marcos for Fifth Straight Win

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s soccer team scored a pair of second half goals and won its fifth straight match, downing Cal State San Marcos, 2-0, at Triton Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night. The victory keeps UC San Diego atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a 7-2 mark in conference play.

The Tritons got on the board in the 50th minute when junior Brett Jones played a ball back for junior Jonathan Sabouri, who found the back of the net. It was Sabouri’s third goal in the last two matches and seventh goal of the season.

In the 69th minute, UC San Diego got some insurance when redshirt freshman Shaheen Daneshvar fired from the top of the 18 and beat the visiting keeper. Daneshvar’s second goal of the season put the Tritons up two-nil.

Cal State San Marcos (5-8-2 overall, 3-4-2 CCAA) continued to push, but the UC San Diego back line stood tall and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard. The shutout was the third straight for the Tritons, who improve to 12-3 overall and 10-3 at home. UC San Diego redshirt junior goalkeeper Pedro Enciso recorded his eighth clean sheet of the season in the victory.

Overall, the Tritons out-shot the Cougars, 16-7 on the night. The Tritons had four corners, and Cal State San Marcos earned three.

UC San Diego returns to the pitch Friday afternoon when the Tritons travel to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State in a CCAA showdown. Action gets underway at 3 p.m. from Seawolf Soccer Field.
