First Place Tritons Run Win Streak to Six
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s soccer team won its sixth consecutive match, blanking Sonoma State, 1-0, on Friday afternoon. The victory keeps the Tritons (13-3 overall) atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with an 8-2 mark and 24 points in conference play.
“It was a gutsy effort by our guys,” said UC San Diego head coach Jon Pascale. “After a long day of travel, we put in a really good shift after playing Wednesday [at home]. I was proud of our hard work.”
The Tritons got on the board in the 26th minute when junior Jonathan Sabouri sent in a cross that redshirt freshman Aidan Cuevas headed into the back of the net to put the visitors up one-nil. The score was Cuevas’ first career tally, and Sabouri’s third assist of the season.
UC San Diego’s defense again played well, and junior goalkeeper Pedro Enciso posted his fourth consecutive – and ninth overall – clean sheet of the season. The victory improves the Tritons’ road record to 3-0.
Sonoma State is 5-7-1 overall and 3-4 in the CAAA after Friday’s setback.
UC San Diego returns to the pitch on Thursday, October 31, when the Tritons visit Cal State Dominguez Hills for a CCAA match. Action gets underway at 7 p.m. from Toro Stadium in Carson.
