SAN RAMON, Calif. - Preston Mott, a junior left-hander in the University of California San Diego program, was named Tuesday as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 26-March 4.
Mott (Clovis/Clovis HS) earned his third straight winning decision in his fourth start of 2018 on Friday afternoon, March 2, in La Jolla, 6-4 over rival Cal Poly Pomona. He scattered three singles and one walk over 7.0 shutout innings, matching the longest outing of his college days, while striking out a career-best 10. Mott retired the side in order in the first and third, and twice struck out the side, though not in order, in the second and sixth. In the sixth inning of a scoreless contest, he allowed a leadoff single and then threw a wild pitch before fanning the next three batters, the last two looking on 3-4 hitters Nic Hernandez and Brennan McKenzie. UCSD opened the scoring in the next half. Mott got to just three three-ball counts among his 26 batters faced. The then-seventh-ranked Tritons and No. 14 Broncos split the series.
Mott has taken his season ERA down to 1.59, and is tied for third in the CCAA with 34 strikeouts, having punched out eight, seven, nine and 10, respectively, in his four starts so far, improving on his single-game career high three separate times already.
This is Mott's first career CCAA Pitcher of the Week distinction, and the third weekly conference award for UCSD already in 2018, after fellow juniors Tyler Durna and Alex Eliopulos were the CCAA Player of the Week on Feb. 13 and Feb. 27, respectively.
Mott is also the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region Pitcher of the Week. Eliopulos had achieved that double just last week, as both the CCAA and NCBWA West Region Player of the Week.
UC San Diego (11-6, 7-5 CCAA), ranked No. 12 in Monday's first in-season edition of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, travels by bus to Northern California this Thursday, March 8, for a four-game CCAA series in Rohnert Park at Sonoma State (8-6, 4-4 CCAA). The opener gets underway at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9.
