Preston Mott Selected CoSIDA Academic All-District for Second Straight Year
LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of California San Diego baseball student-athlete Preston Mott was named Thursday morning to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 First Team for the NCAA Division II, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Mott is now a two-time Academic All-District selection, with freshmen ineligible for the awards. He is one of 11 players and two pitchers on the team, and will advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, to be announced in June.
A pharmacological chemistry major at UC San Diego's Revelle College, Mott maintains a 3.88 grade-point average. He is joined on the team by fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) representatives Tyler Stofiel, a junior catcher for Chico State, and Jackson Kritsch, a sophomore infielder at San Francisco State.
Mott (7-1) shares the team lead with 12 games started, and is first with a 2.97 ERA, seven wins, 69.2 innings pitched, and 73 strikeouts. He is tied for fifth in the CCAA in strikeouts, and tied for fourth in wins. The left-hander out of Clovis (Clovis HS) also paced UC San Diego with 14 starting assignments as a true freshman in 2016, and was second with 14 more a year ago.
Mott also serves as an athletics department chemistry tutor twice a week.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
The 25th-ranked, second-seeded Tritons (35-15) await a winner's bracket showdown with third-seeded, two-time defending tournament champion Chico State (31-20) on the second day of the 2018 CCAA Championship in Stockton on Thursday night, May 10. UC San Diego head coach Eric Newman has announced that he will hand the ball to Mott. First pitch at Banner Island Ballpark is slated for 7 p.m., with video coverage at baosn.tv or on Eleven Sports USA (check local listings).
