UC San Diego Moves Up to No. 10 in First In-Season Collegiate Baseball Poll

UC San Diego

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of California San Diego baseball program has entered the top 10 in the first in-season edition of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll for the NCAA Division II, at No. 10.

UC San Diego was No. 14 in the preseason ranking back on Dec. 19. Winners of six in a row, the Tritons are currently 13-4 overall, and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). They had their entire four-game CCAA series at San Francisco State (9-0-1, 7-0 CCAA), a first-place showdown, wiped out by rain and unplayable field conditions in Northern California this past weekend. The Gators and Tritons are alone in first and second place, respectively, at the start of the week. San Francisco State is rated No. 20 by CBN as the only other CCAA club in the poll.

UC San Diego is the highest-ranked West Region side. The Tritons on Monday morning also remained the unanimous No. 1 in the fourth National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II West Region Poll, receiving all eight first-place votes for the second week in succession. UC San Diego had gone from No. 6 to No. 5 in the NCBWA national ranking last week, and moved up again to No. 3 Tuesday.

The Tritons are back in action after that unexpected week off, this Thursday through Sunday, March 14-17, against city rival Cal State San Marcos (11-11, 7-9 CCAA). The split-venue set begins with back-to-back primetime affairs at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at Triton Ballpark on East Campus in La Jolla. It will conclude Sunday in San Marcos with a noon doubleheader, ahead of winter quarter final exams next week.

Cal State San Marcos has dropped seven of its last eight after the program's best conference start since joining the CCAA in 2016, at 6-2. The Cougars' overall start of 10-4 had matched the best in school history. The Tritons' current six-game win streak came on the heels of a rare four-game slide, which followed a 7-0 opening to the season, their best of the program's Division II era, since 2001.

UC San Diego's team earned run average of 2.54 leads the CCAA and West Region, and is up to fourth nationally in Division II. The Tritons are 12-2 at home thus far in 2019.
