Senior Third Baseman Alex Eliopulos Named Season's Final CCAA Player of the Week

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of California San Diego redshirt senior third baseman Alex Eliopulos (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) was named Tuesday as the 2019 season’s final California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player of the Week, for the week of April 29-May 5.

Eliopulos' second career CCAA weekly honor gives UC San Diego four on the year. The previous three were all sophomore standouts in catcher Aaron Kim (March 5), shortstop Shay Whitcomb (March 19) and first baseman Blake Baumgartner (April 16). Eliopulos had earned this award on Feb. 27, 2018, after another eight-RBI week.

Eliopulos was then-fifth-ranked, now-fourth-ranked UC San Diego's top offensive performer during a four-game CCAA sweep at Cal State East Bay to round out the regular-season slate. Thursday's 21-2 romp in the opener in Hayward, gave the Tritons their first CCAA regular-season title since 2012, and fifth overall.

Eliopulos hit .350 (7-for-20) and slugged .700, with five runs, a double, two home runs, eight RBI and a walk. He led the Tritons in home runs (tied), RBI and total bases (14), and was second in runs and hits. Eliopulos did not strike out at all the entire weekend. He had his third career four-hit game in that Thursday demolition, with a double, two runs and one RBI. Eliopulos homered in game one of Friday's doubleheader, as well as in Saturday's finale, knocking in seven runs over those two contests. His three-run blast opened up a 4-0 lead to cap a four-run third inning Friday. Eliopulos drove in the first run of Saturday's 17-12 decision, and added a two-run single in the fourth and a one-out, solo home run in the seventh.

UC San Diego (35-10, 30-10 CCAA) is en route to Stockton by bus on Tuesday, May 7, back to Northern California for the 2019 CCAA Tournament as its top seed, as well as defending and record seven-time champion. The Tritons will contest the opening game, against sixth-seeded rival Cal Poly Pomona, on Wednesday, May 8. First pitch at the minor-league Stockton Ports' Banner Island Ballpark is set for 11 a.m.
