Brandon Weed Voted D2CCA West Region Pitcher of the Year; Three Teammates Also Earn All-Region Nods
FRESNO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego baseball program on Wednesday had four players named to Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-West Region teams, with junior right-hander Brandon Weed (Lemon Grove/Southwestern College/Grossmont HS) chosen as the D2CCA West Region Pitcher of the Year.
Weed, the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Most Valuable Pitcher, was joined on the D2CCA All-West Region First Team by CCAA Most Valuable Player Shay Whitcomb (Newbury Park/Newbury Park HS), a sophomore shortstop. Redshirt sophomore catcher Aaron Kim (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) and senior left-hander Preston Mott (Clovis/Clovis HS) made the second team. Only Mott is a prior regional honoree, as a unanimous 2018 second-teamer by all three entities.
Weed is 9-1 with a 1.95 ERA, the team's only complete game, and 48 strikeouts against only 10 walks in 69.1 innings. Opponents are hitting just .219 off of him. The Tritons were 13-0 over his first 13 appearances, the first four of which were relief outings before advancing permanently into the starting rotation. They finally lost a CCAA Tournament elimination game last Thursday, May 9, in Stockton, though Weed fired seven more strong frames with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Whitcomb, who is one of three Tritons to start all 47 games thus far, all at shortstop, leads the team with his .335 batting average, 62 hits and 111 total bases, and is tied for third nationally with his 23 doubles. He has 38 runs scored and eight home runs.
Mott is 7-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 55 strikeouts against 23 walks over 61.0 frames. He is second on the team in wins, strikeouts and innings. Kim is hitting .282 and is tied for second in the CCAA with his 11 home runs. Two of them have been grand slams, as he has driven in 38 runs with 10 doubles and 28 runs scored.
The CCAA regular-season champion Tritons (35-12) host the West Regional #2 of the 2019 NCAA Division II Championship, Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Triton Ballpark. UC San Diego sits out the opener on Thursday night between third-seeded Point Loma and No. 6 seed MSU Billings. The Tritons get the loser at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17, and the winner right afterward at 7 p.m., as they are assured of playing twice on Friday. The advancing team on Saturday will find itself in the West Super Regional, two wins away from a trip to Cary, N.C. UC San Diego has won the last two West Region trophies.
