Battle of the Regular Season Champions as No. 13 Tritons Set to Face GNAC's Wildcats
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 13 University of California San Diego softball team is set to compete at the NCAA West Regional #2, which they will host at Triton Softball Field from May 9-11.
Thursday, May 9
- 1 p.m.: Game 1 | No. 2 UC San Diego vs. No. 7 Central Washington
- 3:30 p.m.: Game 2 | No. 3 Chico State vs. No. 6 Sonoma State
Friday, May 10
- Noon: Game 3 | Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2
- 2:30 p.m.: Game 4 | Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2
- 5 p.m.: Game 5 | Loser Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4
Saturday, May 11
- 11 a.m.: Game 6 | Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5
- 1:30 p.m.: Game 7 | Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5 (if necessary)
SEEDINGS AND FORMAT
The regional is a double-elimination competition. Regionals are held at 16 sites throughout the country, with four teams competing at each site. West Regional #1 – featuring the first, fourth, fifth, and eighth seeds, will be held at Concordia Irvine, while the second-seeded Tritons are hosting the third, sixth, and seventh seeds at West Regional #2.
With its 31-14 record on the season, UC San Diego has earned the second seed in the West Region.

UC San Diego’s first matchup is against seventh-seeded Central Washington. The all-time series record is in the Tritons’ favor, as they hold a 7-2 record against the Wildcats.
Most recently, the Tritons and Wildcats faced off in 2016, as they faced each other twice that season. During the regular season, the two teams met at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock. UC San Diego came away with a 3-1 win on April 3, 2016, as then-freshman Maddy Lewis knocked in a run to help the Tritons’ efforts when she drove a single up the middle in the fifth inning.
It was another close one on May 7, 2016, but the outcome was not in the Tritons’ favor this time. Battling at the NCAA West Regional #2, the Tritons came up just short, 6-5, despite putting up three runs in the seventh.
This will be the first time the Tritons and Wildcats have met since the 2016 season. Hitting has been a strong point for the Wildcats this season, as they hold a .340 team batting average, which is good for 11th in the nation.
In regard to defense and pitching, UC San Diego has the edge, on paper. The Tritons have recorded a .965 fielding percentage as a team, and their pitching staff has combined for a 3.69 ERA. Central Washington, on the other hand, holds a .945 team fielding percentage and an ERA of 4.58.
The matchup pits two Coaches of the Year and regular season champions against each other. Triton Head Coach Patti Gerckens was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coach of the Year after she led UC San Diego to a regular season title, while Wildcat Head Coach Mike Larabee received the honor for coaching his team to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title.
The UC San Diego Athletics Department, in conjunction with Triton Tide, has purchased 100 complimentary tickets each day during the West Regional #2 for UC San Diego students. In addition, on Thursday, the first 25 UC San Diego students in attendance will receive a free Triton Adidas snapback.
HOW TO ATTEND
Adult admission is $10, while students with ID, senior citizens, and children ages 2-12 are $5. Children under two are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available for purchase one hour before first pitch at the ticket table.
Please note that parking permits are required for fans on Thursday and Friday. Permits can be purchased at pay machines in parking lots and structures. Fans are encouraged to park in the Hopkins Parking Structure, which is located just south of Triton Softball Field within walking distance of the field. On weekends, parking is free.

FOLLOW ALONG FROM HOME
The victor of West Regional #2 will advance to the Super Regionals, facing the champion of West Regional #1. Following that, the remaining teams will compete in the finals at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver.
