PALM SPRINGS, Calif. The 4th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team made several outstanding defensive plays and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills by a 2-1 score in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Palm Springs Stadium. “Our defense was what picked up our offense today and was the reason why we won,” said head coach Dan O'Brien. The Tritons scored twice in the second and put out every CSUDH rally with superb plays in the field. With the win, UCSD improves to 34-12, and will play on Friday in a semifinal match-up against the Sonoma State or Cal State L.A. winner.

Tim Shibuya earned the win improving to 7-4 on the year. Shibuya went seven innings and scattered seven hits. His lone mistake was a homerun given up to CCAA MVP Jon Alia in the sixth.

Guido Knudson earned his ninth save of the season, coming in with a runner on second and no outs in the eighth, facing the powerful Alia. Knudson would strike out Alia after falling behind 3-0, and then retire the next two Toros. Knudson got defensive plays from Vance Albitz and Josh Tanner to close out the win.

In the UCSD second, Gregorich singled to right field and Tim Mort reached on a fielders’ choice sac bunt. Gregorich was safe at second beating out a throw by the pitcher. Kellen Lee layed down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Robert Sedin hit a sac fly to center to drive in Gregorich and UCSD led 1-0. After Mort and Lee converted on a double steal, Vance Albitz singled through the left side for an RBI and UCSD led 2-0.

In the CSUDH sixth, Jon Alia hit a homerun over the centerfield fence, just clearing the 375 foot sign and CSUDH trailed 2-1. Shibuya recovered to retire the next three batters to keep the Tritons in the lead.

In the UCSD sixth, Evan Kehoe led off with UCSD’s first extra base hit, a double to left. Gregorich followed with a double to right field, but Kehoe was thrown out at the plate.

In the CSUDH eighth, Andrew Baslow led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Knudson fell behind 3-0 on Alia, but came back to strike out the CCAA MVP, the first time Alia was retired on the day. With one out and a runner still in scoring position, Knudson got a ground out to the right side for the second out as the potential tying run advanced to third. The next CSUDH batter grounded out to shortstop and UCSD led 2-1 in the eighth.

In the CSUDH ninth, Josh Tanner made a diving stab on a ground ball to record the first out. After a one out single, Knudson retired the second out on a strikeout and then earned the save on a lineout right to the third baseman Tanner.

The loss went to Kody Kurowski who went six innings and allowed just two runs.

UCSD advances to play the winner of Sonoma State vs. Cal State L.A. on Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the CCAA Championship semifinal.
