Valeria Corral Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA West Region Championships

AZUSA, Calif. and GLENDORA, Calif.  - The University of California San Diego women's tennis team opened its 2017-18 season at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region Championships, hosted by Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College Thursday and Friday.

Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) had a strong showing, advancing to the quarterfinals in the 64-player field. The sophomore rolled through the Round of 64 and Round of 32, winning in straight sets. She commenced her season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tinisee Kandaki of Biola and then topped Sonoma State's Katherine Long by the same scores.

In the Round of 16, Corral upset Academy of Art's Alma Thell-Lenntorp, the tournament's sixth seed, by scores of 6-1, 1-6, and 10-7, moving her into the quarters.

Corral went up against Anastasiia Kuprina of Concordia Irvine, the No. 3 seed in the tourney, in the quarterfinals. Kuprina won the match, 6-2 and 6-2, and later went on to win the tournament's singles title.

UCSD sophomore Becky Chou won a hard-fought Round of 64 match-up with Kayla Nguyen of Stanislaus State, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. Moving on to the Round of 32, Chou battled through another long match, this time falling to Concordia Irvine's Johanna Keeling, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.

Senior Nousha Nowamooz and sophomore Brittany Newton both lost in their opening round matches. April Wong from Azusa Pacific downed Nowamooz (6-0, 6-4) and Esther Lee of Biola dispatched Newton (6-3, 6-2).

In doubles play, both of UC San Diego's duos were defeated in the Round of 32. Chou and Corral were beaten by Azusa Pacific's Tatiana Betancourt and Jourdan Jefferson, while Newton and Nowamooz were felled by Courtney Page and Mikayla Rinker, also from APU. Both matches featured an 8-5 score.

The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I,II,III, NAIA, Junior, and Community Colleges compete across 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships around the country.

The ITA West Regional Championships concluded UC San Diego's fall competition slate.
