LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's tennis team learned Tuesday that it has received a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division II Championship and will open play against Hawai'i Pacific in a West Regional match-up on Saturday, April 28.

The match, which will be held at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex in Honolulu, will start at 1 p.m. PDT.

UC San Diego, ranked 19th nationally, is the West Region's fourth seed. HPU, ranked second in the country, is serving as the top seed. The winner of Saturday's match advances to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship, May 8-11 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.

UC San Diego (13-10) is returning to the NCAA tourney after missing out in 2017. HPU (18-2) is making its 20th-straight appearance.

The Tritons and Sharks have met twice already this season. On Feb. 18 in Hawai'i, HPU rolled to a 7-0 victory. UC San Diego avenged the loss on March 9, taking a 5-4 win at Northview Courts in La Jolla. At that time, the Tritons were ranked 14th nationally and the Sharks were fourth.

UC San Diego boasts three players in the national rankings for singles including sophomore Becky Chou at No. 14, junior Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) at No. 22, and junior Alexandra Weil at No. 42. In doubles play, the duo of Chao and Chou are ranked 42nd in the country.

Chao is 12-10 this season in the No. 1 singles position, while Chou, who has won her last seven matches, holds the same record playing mostly at No. 2. Weil is 10-12 overall, primarily at No. 3. Senior Jasmine Hosseini, who plays the bulk of her matches at No. 4, has compiled an impressive 15-2 mark and sophomore Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) is 12-9 between No. 4 and No. 5. Hosseini and Corral have both won six-straight matches. Several Tritons have played at No. 6, including junior Chloe Wight, who is 5-6 overall and 5-4 at No. 6.

In doubles, Chao and Chou have gone 13-9 in the top spot. Weil and junior Madison Hale are 13-10 at No. 2 and Wight and senior Nousha Nowamooz are 12-9 at No. 3.

In the other West Regional, third-seeded Academy of Art (16-5) will play at second-seeded Azusa Pacific (19-8) Saturday with the victor moving on to Arizona.

Of the 48 teams selected to compete in NCAA postseason play, 21 earned automatic bids by winning a conference tournament, while 27 others are at-large qualifiers. UC San Diego is an at-large selection, while Hawai'i Pacific won the PacWest Conference Tournament.
