No. 37 Tritons Cruise to 4-0 Road Win, Their Sixth Straight, to Complete Season Sweep of Point Loma

UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The No. 37 University of California San Diego women's tennis team blanked city rival Point Loma Nazarene University, 4-0, for another result key to its NCAA postseason hopes, Monday afternoon at the PLNU Tennis Courts.

Now a winner of a season-best six matches in a row, UC San Diego achieved its 10th win of the 2019 dual campaign, improving to 10-5. The Tritons also thus swept this season-long five-match road stretch, which in fact marked their first road activity, to move to 5-0 outside of La Jolla.

UC San Diego also completed a second successive season sweep over Point Loma, having won in shutout fashion at home as well, 7-0, back on Feb. 27. That's now four straight victories over the Sea Lions.

"This was another good win for us," said UC San Diego head coach Liz LaPlante. "We had to rest Chloe (Wight) in singles, but the team played incredibly tough."

UC San Diego and Point Loma were rated No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Athletic Association (ITA) West Region poll back in January. Back-to-back road wins over a three-day span against No. 3 Azusa Pacific and Point Loma will go a long way toward an NCAA Championship return for LaPlante's Tritons. Four teams from the West qualify.

Junior Valeria Corral (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) is now a winner of nine consecutive singles matches after an easy 6-2, 6-1, decision over Taylor McGowan. All nine have come at the No. 4 position. It is the longest win streak by a Triton in either singles or doubles in this 2019 campaign. On Monday, Corral was the clincher.

The day began with the Tritons procuring the doubles point. Fourth-year senior duo Madison Hale and Alexandra Weil won their sixth straight at No. 2, 6-3, to move to 10-2 on the year together. Senior Ashley Chao (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) and junior partner Becky Chou, the nation's 44th-ranked doubles tandem, then defeated their opponents at No. 1, 6-4. Freshman Shweta Kumar and redshirt junior Chloe Wight rounded out the sweep, 7-6 (7-2), at No. 3.

Kumar downed Michelle Torres at No. 5 to begin singles play, 7-5, 6-0. It was the Irvine product's fifth victory in a row. Weil then notched the 10th singles win of her final collegiate campaign, now at 10-3, with a 6-3, 7-5, decision at No. 2 over Gabi Armas. Weil and Armas are rated No. 10 and No. 11, respectively, in the West Region in singles.

The match was halted after Corral's clinch. Chou was closest at No. 3, literally at quadruple match point, up 6-4, 5-4 and 40-30, over Ellie Gamble. Chao was ahead on the No. 1 court, 6-4, 4-3, over Shelby Groeneveld. Freshman Anu Bhadada (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS), in the lineup in place of Wight, split two sets at No. 6 with Nicole Camaratta, losing the first in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), and taking the second, 6-1.

UC San Diego is now home for two more West Region dates over the remainder of the week. The Tritons host Concordia Irvine on Wednesday, April 10, at 2 p.m., and then Cal State LA on Saturday, April 13, at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. Admission is free into Northview Tennis Courts on North Campus in La Jolla. Parking is free Saturday.
