Ashley Chao Named ITA Senior Player of the Year for NCAA Division II West Region
TEMPE, Ariz. - Ashley Chao, a fourth-year senior in the University of California San Diego women's tennis program, was named last Wednesday, May 15, as the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Senior Player of the Year for the NCAA Division II West Region.
This is the second ITA accolade in as many years for the San Diego native out of Rancho Bernardo High School, as Chao was the recipient of a regional Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award at the conclusion of her junior season.
Chao just recently wrapped up her stellar college career, as No. 29 UC San Diego was narrowly edged at home, 4-3, by No. 23 Azusa Pacific in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Championship on Tuesday, May 14. The Tritons finished with an overall dual-match record of 12-8, and a third NCAA bid in Chao's four years.
Individually, Chao's doubles victory that day at No. 1 with third-year partner Becky Chou, marked a milestone for her. It meant career win No. 100 for Chao combined across singles and doubles in collegiate dual contests. She wound up 44-38 in singles and 56-27 in doubles as a Triton. Of those doubles triumphs, 42 came with Chou. Chao played at No. 1 singles and doubles as both a junior and senior, and was at No. 2 in singles and doubles as a sophomore, and at No. 2 doubles as a freshman.
Chao is a mathematics-computer science major at UC San Diego's Sixth College, nearing the completion of her undergraduate degree.
