RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's rowing squad is set to compete at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships this Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1, on Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento.
UCSD will be sending out four boats to compete in three events.
On Saturday at 11:50 a.m, the Novice 8 boat takes to the starting line in heat one. The Tritons will be competing against Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Oregon, Sonoma State and Chico State.
UCSD will send out two boats in the Second Varsity 8 competition. The Tritons' Third Varsity 8 crew rows in heat one at 12:30 p.m against San Diego State, UC Davis, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Shortly after, at 12:40 p.m, the Second Varsity 8 is set to compete in heat two against Santa Clara, UC Irvine, Washington State, Lewis and Clark and UC Santa Barbara.
The final heat race of the day for the Tritons begins at 2:50 p.m with the Varsity 8 boat competing in heat three against Orange Coast College, UCLA, Puget Sound, Humboldt State and Sonoma State.
The Novice 8 third and petite finals will also take place Saturday. The remainder of the finals are scheduled for Sunday.
Last season, UCSD advanced four of its boats to grand finals at the WIRA Championships. The Second Varsity 8 took first with the B crew placing fourth, while the Novice 8 and Varsity 8 both finished sixth. The Tritons' Varsity 4 contingent was fifth in the petite final.
