NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's rowing team captured first place in the Varsity 8 race at the 2nd annual UC Cup Challenge on Saturday at Newport Beach.
The Tritons rowed against the fellow UCs at Irvine, Los Angeles, Davis and Santa Barbara.
Despite falling behind in the last leg of the V8 race due to a stuck oar, UC San Diego (5:56.9) rallied from behind and finished in first, edging out UC Davis (5:59.0).
In third, UCLA finished with a 6:00.6 mark, seven seconds ahead of UCI who completed the race with a time of 6:07.4. Rounding out the race at sixth was UC Santa Barbara who tallied a 6:30.2 finishing time.
"It was difficult conditions with the wind and tide playing a heavy factor." said UCSD head coach Zach Johnson. "The team handled it extremely well and our varsity crew came through the race trusting that they could overcome any adversity."
The JV8 event saw two Triton boats, A and B, placing second and third respectively. UCLA took the top spot with an end time of 6:00.8. UCSD A finished next at 6:05.4 and UCSD B was right behind at 6:10.5. UC Davis brought up the rear with a 6:44.5 finish.
