UC San Diego Has Strong Performances at Western Sprints Challenge
SAN DIEGO — The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team fared well in this weekend’s Western Sprints Challenge at Mission Bay, which featured the Tritons, the University of San Diego, Gonzaga and Santa Clara.
UC San Diego won six of its nine races in the two-day event, as the Tritons JV and 3V crews each went unbeaten over the weekend.
“I’m very proud of the team and its overall performance,” said UC San Diego head coach Zach Johnson. “We showed tremendous depth with some of our key athletes still out.
“The varsity boat is a good team but is still finding its identity as the line-ups keep changing. We have very good seniors in that boat, and they will figure it out and help make their teammates better, which are keys to our success this year.”
The UC San Diego Varsity 8+ crew led in races against Gonzaga and USD before hitting some challenging water conditions. The Tritons finished second to Gonzaga’s time of 6-minutes, 9.35-seconds on Sunday, as UC San Diego crossed the finish line in 6:11.55.
