Men's Rowing Excels in Day One at Crew Classic, Varsity 8 Takes First in Their Heat

UC San Diego

MISSION BAY, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team opened competition at the esteemed San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning in Mission Bay.

The Tritons got off to a hot start, as the Varsity 8 captured first place in heat two of the Men’s Varsity American Specialty Health Cup. UC San Diego won by open water, crossing the finish line at 6:06.428 to defeat seven competitors. The next best finish was from UC Santa Barbara, who trailed the Tritons by 3.272 seconds with a mark of 6:09.700.

In the second heat of the Men’s Collegiate 2V Sharp Memorial Cup, the Second Varsity 8 turned in a runner-up finish. The Tritons came in behind only Cal to finish second of five squads, clocking in at 6:20.544.

UC San Diego’s final race of the day was the Men’s Open 8. Turning in a time of 7:03.299, the Tritons placed fourth of six crews.

“I think it was another good step for our season,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the team’s performances. “We’ve only been rowing these lineups for a day, so I think we’re making some good progress as we continue to march towards the end of the season… Consistency has been one of the things we struggle with during the races… so that’s what we’re focusing on tomorrow, not the result but actually the process.”

Tomorrow, the Tritons return to action for the second day of the Crew Classic. For details on how to attend and how to follow along from home, click here.
