Varsity 8 Earns Runner-Up Finish as Tritons Conclude at Crew Classic

UC San Diego

MISSION BAY, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team wrapped up action at the San Diego Crew Classic this afternoon at Mission Bay. It was another warm, sunny day, as the Tritons competed in four races in front of the crowds.

After winning their heat yesterday, the Tritons’ Varsity 8 earned a spot in the Men’s Varsity American Specialty Health Cup Final 1. UC San Diego and Purdue battled for first in the first two lanes, but the Boilermakers ultimately came out on top. The Tritons clocked in at 6:06.404, only 2.300 seconds behind Purdue. UC San Diego had the top finish of all four UC teams that qualified, and claimed second of eight teams overall.

In the Men’s Collegiate 2V Sharp Memorial Cup Final 1, the Tritons turned in a third-place finish behind only Yale and Cal. The two schools’ Varsity 8 squads were two of the top three crews in the nation in the final 2018 US Rowing Coaches’ Poll. The Tritons crossed the finish line in 6:28.054, finishing ahead of five other teams.

UC San Diego’s day began with the Men’s Collegiate 3V Final 1. The Tritons’ Third Varsity 8 squad was even with Cal early on, but the Golden Bears were able to pull away. UC San Diego took control of second place, cruising to a runner-up finish with a time of 6:27.195. The next best finish, by familiar foe Santa Clara (6:44.835), was more than 27 seconds behind the Tritons’ mark.

In the Tritons’ final race of the day, the Men’s Open 8 Final 1, the Tritons came in at third, with Cal A and B taking the top two slots. UC San Diego recorded a mark of 7:05.941 to come in well ahead of UC Davis and Southern California.

“I thought overall the team performed really well,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the Tritons’ races. “We’re making strides which is exactly what we want to do as we get towards the end of the year, and we’re getting faster, which is what we need to do at this time of year.”

Next, the Tritons have a weekend off before heading to the East Coast. UC San Diego will scrimmage St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia on April 19, and will take part in the Kerr Cup Invitational Regatta on April 20.
