Sweep! Tritons' V8, 2V8, and 3V8 Crews All Claim First at WIRA Championships
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team dominated on the final day of the WIRA Championships, as the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 crews swept their grand finals.
“It feels good,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the victories. “We’re the first team to sweep the big boats in at least the last decade. I’m very proud of the team effort to perform when we wanted to. We still have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks as we know both Gonzaga and Santa Clara will be coming for us at our Championships.”
It was a tight race in the Men’s Varsity 8 grand final, as the Tritons battled Gonzaga, Orange Coast, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. Late in the race, UC San Diego was dead even with Santa Clara and Gonzaga as the teams approached the finish line, but the Tritons pulled ahead just in time to claim first place. With their mark of 5:53.812, they took the top slot, followed by Santa Clara (5:54.847) and Gonzaga (5:55.147).
In the Men’s Second Varsity 8 grand final, UC San Diego was pitted against Gonzaga, Orange Coast, Santa Clara, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. The Tritons led comfortably, and finished their race with a time of 6:02.419. Earning another top finish for UC San Diego, they came in over six seconds ahead of second-place Santa Clara (6:08.585). Orange Coast (6:11.257) rounded out the top three.
The Triton Third Varsity 8 crew was unreachable in their race, as they took on Santa Clara and UC Santa Barbara. Gonzaga was slated to take part in the race as well, but scratched. With its time of 6:12.726, UC San Diego won by open water, well ahead of its two competitors. Santa Clara followed with a mark of 6:28.406, while UC Santa Barbara turned in a time of 6:32.538 for third place.
Next, the Tritons will return to Sacramento on May 11 for the Western Sprints Championships. They will look to repeat their success from last season, as they captured first in every race they competed in, like they did at this weekend’s WIRA Championships.
