Tritons' V8, 2V8, and 3V8 Crews All Ranked in Latest IRA/USRowing Polls

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California men’s rowing team has earned spots in the top-25 of three of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA)/USRowing Varsity 8+ Polls. The polls are voted on by collegiate coaches and were released this afternoon. View the full poll results here.

The Tritons’ Varsity 8 crew jumps into their poll at number 25 with 13 points. Yale, the University of Washington, and Harvard hold the top three slots, respectively.

In their last outing, the Tritons claimed the Men’s Varsity 8 Grand Final at the WIRA Championships with a thrilling victory. UC San Diego pulled ahead of Santa Clara and Gonzaga late in the race to take first with a time of 5:53.812. The Varsity 8 crew earned the UC San Diego Athletes of the Week honor for their performance.

UC San Diego’s Second Varsity 8 enters their poll at 24th with 11 points. Washington, Yale, and Berkeley claim the top three spots.

Like the Varsity 8, the Second Varsity 8 crew came away with a first-place finish in their grand final at the WIRA Championships. Turning in a mark of 6:02.419, UC San Diego topped five crews to claim their win.

The Third Varsity 8 crew ranks 19th in their poll, tied with Stanford with 68 points each. As with the Second Varsity 8 poll, Washington, Yale, and Berkeley make up the top three.

The Tritons’ Third Varsity 8 rounded out the sweep at the WIRA Championships, as they won their race by open water. Crossing the finish line at 6:12.276, the Tritons were well ahead of foes Santa Clara and UC Santa Barbara.

UC San Diego will look to climb the rankings as it heads to the Western Sprints Championships. The Tritons will compete in Rancho Cordova on May 11.
