RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego men’s rowing team will take part in the Western Sprints Championships on Saturday.

The competition will take place on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova. Admission to the races is free.

Last season, the Tritons put together four first-place finishes to sweep the Western Sprints Championships. The Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8, and Varsity 4 crews all came out on top in their races.

“The team is doing really well,” said Head Coach Zach Johnson. “I think if they can race their best race, let things transpire, and keep their heads in the game, they’ll do fine. I think it’s about making the right decisions at the right time.”

In the latest IRA/US Rowing Polls, the UC San Diego Varsity 8 holds 25th, the Second Varsity 8 ranks 24th, and the Third Varsity 8 is tied for 20th with Stanford. View the full poll results here.

The Tritons previously swept the WIRA Championships, as the Varsity 8, Second Varisty 8, and Third Varsity 8 crews all placed first in their grand finals. It was an award-winning effort, as Steven Bolton and Jason Germain earned All-WIRA First Team accolades, Greg Coffman and Victor de Cos received All-WIRA Second Team nods, and Head Coach Zach Johnson was named WIRA Coach of the Year. Next, the Tritons will find out their fate during the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) online selection show. The IRA will announce their national championship fields, seedings, and lane draws on Tuesday at 4 p.m. (PST). The selection show will be streamed here, and fans must set up a free account in order to view the broadcast.
