2V8 Crew Tops Fourth Level Final as No. 25 Tritons Finish Season at IRA Championship

UC San Diego

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego men’s rowing team competed at the finals of the IRA Championship on Lake Natoma this morning. The Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 all raced in their respective finals, closing out the 2019 season.

The highlight of the day was the Second Varsity 8’s performance. In the Fourth-Level Final, the Tritons captured the top spot. Facing No. 13 George Washington, No. 17 Drexel, No. 25 Florida Tech, and Santa Clara (RV), the 24th-ranked Tritons defeated all four teams.

Crossing the finish line at 6:04.730 to claim first, the Tritons were trailed by Drexel, George Washington, Florida Tech, and Santa Clara, respectively. Next-best finisher Drexel came in a little over two seconds behind the Tritons, and all of the competing teams finished within two seconds of each other.

The Varsity 8 crew also competed in their Fourth-Level Final. The Tritons were pitted against No. 18 Oregon State, No. 19 Florida Tech, No. 21 Drexel, No. 23 Hobart, and Santa Clara. UC San Diego finished sixth, turning in a time of 6:05.245 in the race. Florida Tech took the top slot, with its mark of 5:51.588.

UC San Diego’s Third Varsity 8 crew took part in the Third-Level Final, taking on No. 13 Cornell, No. 14 George Washington, No. 16 Oregon State, T-No. 17 Stanford, T-No. 17 Hobart, and No. 20 Drexel. The Tritons placed seventh as they finished the race at the 6:18.552 mark. Cornell placed first in the final, with its time of 6:04.426.

"Overall, it was a good day with JV having another great performance," said Head Coach Zach Johnson about the team's achievement. "They really stepped up to the occasion and led wire to wire. Our other two boats came up short, but overall as a program had the best overall season in our history as a team, with all three boats performing well all year and posting top racing results. Something great to grow on and a lasting impact from our seniors!"

This is the third-straight season that UC San Diego has competed at the championship. With the conclusion of the IRA National Championship, the Tritons’ season comes to a close.
