LA JOLLA, Calif. – Geoff Bond has been named the head coach of the University of California San Diego men’s rowing team, according to Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards. Bond becomes the 12th head coach to lead the team since the program’s start in 1967.

“I am extremely excited for Geoff Bond to take on the role of the head coach of the UC San Diego men’s rowing team,” said Edwards. “Geoff has phenomenal coaching experience, as he has coached at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California Berkeley. We know with his impressive experience that he will promote academic and athletic excellence among the UC San Diego team. The men’s rowing team is coming off of an incredible season in 2018 and we know that Geoff will raise the bar even higher.”

“It is an honor to be selected to lead the UC San Diego men’s rowing team,” said Bond. “I deeply appreciate the opportunity that Athletics Director Earl Edwards has given me to build on the fantastic work done by Zach Johnson. The oarsmen I have met so far have the passion and enthusiasm that is essential to fast boats. I am excited to join the Triton family.”

Bond previously served as the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 2015-19. He oversaw training, recruiting, and fundraising efforts for the Quakers. Bond guided his team throughout cup season and championship season, as they competed at the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship each year.

Bond also spent time coaching at Cal. After serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the varsity crew from 1996-00, Bond was the team’s associate head coach from 2000-2009. During his time with the Golden Bears, the team collected numerous accolades. Among the highlights were gold-medal finishes at the 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008 IRA National Championships.

Bond is a graduate of Brown University. He rowed on IRA National Championship medal-winning teams and also served as the boathouse caretaker.
