SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Chris Hansen's double-double paced the top-seeded University of California San Diego to a 65-53 win against No. 4 Chico State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball Tournament semifinal Friday at The Sports Center.
UC San Diego, which improved to 24-5, will face second-seeded San Francisco State in the tourney championship game on Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The 24 wins equal the Tritons' most since becoming an NCAA Division II program for the 2000-01 season.
Hansen finished with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. The sophomore center made nine of his 19 shots to go along with a pair of blocks and a steal. It was Hansen's seventh game this year with at least 20 points.
Senior guard Adam Klie, named the CCAA Player of the Year Thursday, totaled 15 points, four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes. Sophomore swingman Christian Oshita went for 10 points, five boards and a block.
UC San Diego led the entire game as Klie opened the scoring with a layup and the Tritons never looked back. They led by seven, 27-20, at halftime and the Wildcats would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. UCSD's largest lead of the game was 16, which occurred once in each half.
The Tritons held Chico State to 29 percent (8-28) shooting in the first half and the Wildcats made just nine of 19 free throws on the night, 47 percent.
UCSD shot 42 percent (24-57) overall.
The Wildcats got a game-high 21 points from Isaiah Ellis and 11 out of Robert Duncan. Ellis also had a team-high eight boards. Chico fell to 23-7 with the loss.
San Francisco State (25-4), ranked 19th nationally, earned its berth in Saturday's title game by virtue of a 65-55 win against third-seeded Sonoma State Friday night.
The Tritons and Gators have met only once this season with UCSD taking a 67-55 win in San Francisco back on Jan. 13.
Saturday's game will be UC San Diego's third CCAA Tournament title bout appearance. The Tritons won the tourney in 2008.
