Tough Shooting Night Leads to Loss at San Francisco State
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of California San Diego men's basketball team made just 35 percent of its shots and suffered a 71-58 loss at league rival San Francisco State Saturday evening.
UC San Diego, which had its three-game win streak snapped, fell to 15-7 overall and 12-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons slid from second to fourth in the league standings. SF State improved to 14-9 on the year and 10-7 in the conference.
"We didn't play well enough to win tonight," said UCSD head coach Eric Olen. "SF State is a very good team, they were well-prepared. It takes a high level of basketball to win in the CCAA, and we weren't able to sustain that level tonight."
For the night, UCSD hit 20 of it 57 shot attempts. The team's .351 shooting percentage matched its second-lowest of the season. The Tritons shot 38.5 percent (10-26) in the first half and dropped to 32.3 percent (10-31) in the second. They were also lackluster from behind the three-point line, hitting only nine of 33, 27.3 percent. That percentage was also their second-lowest of the year.
Christian Oshita scored a game-high 21 points for UC San Diego. He completed his third double-double of the season by adding 10 rebounds.
Four Gators scored in double-digits as Warren Jackson led the way with 15 points. Chiefy Ugbaja registered a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 boards.
San Francisco State shot 50.8 percent (30-59) overall, which included a 63 percent (17-27) clip in the second half. The Gators scored 42 of their points in the paint and out-rebounded the Tritons, 40-28.
With SF State up by just three points (48-45) and 8:08 left in the game, the Gators mounted a seven-point run that put them in front by 10, 55-45, at the 5:43 mark. UCSD would get no closer than eight from that point on.
The Tritons led by as many as six points in the first half and by four early in the second frame after Anthony Ballestero hit a three. SF State's Jash Kahlon netted a jumper at 14:22 of the second to put the Gators in front by a score of 38-36 and they led the rest of the way.
UC San Diego returns to La Jolla to host Cal Poly Pomona for Spirit Night on Friday, Feb. 9.
This year's Spirit Night is a celebration of the rise of UC San Diego Athletics to the NCAA Division I ranks and we want to #PackRIMAC to demonstrate the energy and sense of community and tradition that Division I brings to campus.
Before the basketball contests, there will be a student tailgate with free food, interactive games, and a DJ that starts at 4:30 p.m. on RIMAC Field.
We're expecting a capacity crowd, so get there before the women's game, which tips at 5:30 p.m. For complete info, visit our Spirit Night page.
