Tritons Edged by Cal State Dominguez Hills Buzzer Beater

LA JOLLA, Calif. - A deep, three-point buzzer beater by freshman Colten Kresl lifted Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 77-76 win against the University of California San Diego Thursday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action at RIMAC Arena.

Down 76-74 with 3.6 seconds on the clock, Kresl took an end line inbound pass from Glenn Baral and raced down the right side of the court. Pulling up from about 25 feet out, he launched a shot that drilled the back of the rim and went in, giving the Toros the win and Kresl his team-best 19th point of the game.

The loss dropped UC San Diego to 17-10 overall and 14-7 in the CCAA. Dominguez Hills, which clinched the eighth and final berth in next week's conference tournament with the victory, improved to 13-15 and 10-11.

Christian Bayne scored a game-high 25 points for UCSD. He was 10-for-16 shooting with four three-pointers, three assists, and a career-high five steals. Mikey Howell (San Marcos/San Marcos HS) totaled a career-best 13 points, while Scott Everman had 12 points and Christian Oshita added 11 to go along with a career-high four assists and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Tritons shot .468 (29-62) and hit 12 three-pointers. They held a 32-29 edge in rebounding, which included an 8-3 advantage on the offensive glass.

UCSD overcame a 13-point deficit in the game. Down 33-20 with 5:10 remaining in the first half, the Tritons went on a 19-4 run. Bayne hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds until the break to get the Tritons back within five points at 37-32. Bayne then opened the scoring in the second half with a layup, which was followed by a three from Everman to tie it. A Michael Shoemaker layup put them up 39-37, their first lead since mid-way through the first frame.

Everman made a layup with 3:59 left in the game that moved UC San Diego in front by seven, 71-64. However, the Toros scored eight unanswered points during a run that was ignited by a Baral three-pointer. A Kresl jumper at the 2:44 mark had CSUDH leading, 72-71. Bayne netted a three to give the lead back to the Tritons and Kresl made a layup to knot it at 74-74. Two free throws by Howell with 1:01 left made it 76-74 in favor of UC San Diego. A missed three-pointer by the Toros and a missed layup by the Tritons preceded Kresl's game-winning bomb.

Cal State Dominguez Hills made 54.5 percent (30-55) of its shots overall and 52.2 percent (12-23) of its three-pointers. Matt Hayes had 16 points, Malcolm Johnson had 12, and Deondre Otis finished with 11. Kresl drained five treys.

CSUDH swept the regular season series from UCSD as it won, 65-63, back on Dec. 19 in Carson.

UC San Diego had previously secured a spot in the upcoming league tourney and will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

The Tritons conclude their regular season on Saturday, Feb. 24, as they host Cal State LA (13-14, 9-12) at 7:30 p.m. The five seniors on the roster - Anthony Ballestero, George Buaku, Kenny Fraser, Brett Oosdyke, and Shoemaker - will be honored prior to tip-off.
