LA JOLLA, Calif. - Christian Bayne and Christian Oshita combined for 37 points as the University of California San Diego men's basketball team closed out its regular season by rolling to an 84-64 win against Cal State LA Saturday on Senior Night at RIMAC Arena.
UC San Diego improved to 18-10 overall and concluded its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) campaign in third place with a 15-7 mark. The Tritons head into next week's eight-team CCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Stanislaus State in a quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
UCSD led for almost the entire game. A layup by Bayne with 6:32 left in the opening half put the Tritons up by 11 (28-17), their first double-digit lead of the night. With 10:08 left in the second half, Michael Shoemaker made a layup that gave them a 27-point (67-40) advantage, their largest of the game.
Oshita finished with 19 points and Bayne was just behind with 18. They each had a team-high five rebounds and Oshita added three assists, two steals, and a block. Senior George Buaku had a season-high 10 points to go along with four assists.
The Tritons were hot from the field, making 33 of their 61 shots (54.1 percent). It was their best shooting performance since hitting at a 55.6 percent clip against Humboldt State on Jan. 5.
Cal State LA (13-15, 9-13) was led by Jalyn Pennie, who had 18 points. Elliott Smith and Grant Arthur each finished with 12 points.
The teams combined for 35 turnovers in the fast-paced game with CSULA losing the ball 18 times and UCSD 17 times.
Saturday's win was the 100th for UCSD head coach Eric Olen. Now in his fifth year leading the Tritons, he holds a 100-46 (.685) record at the school.
UC San Diego is 1-1 this season against Stanislaus State (17-11, 12-10 CCAA). The Tritons defeated the Warriors, 70-58, on Dec. 31 in Turlock and lost, 76-66, in overtime on Jan. 18 in La Jolla.
The tournament semifinals and final will be played March 2-3 at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.
