LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sunday night, the NCAA announced the field of 64 teams that will compete in the 2018 Division II Men’s Basketball Championship and the the University of California San Diego learned that it will serve as the sixth seed for the West Regional. The Tritons will take on third-seeded and 18th-ranked California Baptist in a quarterfinal on Friday, March 9, on the campus of Western Oregon.
The game, which is the opening contest of the regional, is set to tip off at 12 p.m. at WOU's New P.E. Gymnasium in Monmouth, Ore. The winner will play the winner of the No. 7 Azusa Pacific/No. 2 Dixie State quarterfinal in a semifinal on Saturday, March 10, at 5 p.m.
The other two Friday quarterfinals feature No. 5 Saint Martin's against No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 8 Point Loma against top-seeded Western Oregon.
The regional championship game is slated for Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
UCSD (21-10) won its second-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship title Saturday, securing an automatic berth in the NCAA tourney.
California Baptist (25-5) earned an at large bid into the regional. The Lancers were defeated by Dixie State in the PacWest Tournament championship game.
UCSD and CBU met earlier this season, with the Lancers, ranked 14th nationally at the time, taking a 78-73 win in Riverside on Nov. 18.
UC San Diego is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Tritons also qualified in 2008, 2016, and 2017, reaching the West Region title game in each of the last two seasons.
Twenty-four conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the 2018 Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. The remaining 40 teams were selected at large by the committee.
