Chris Hansen, Christian Bayne Earn NABC All-District Recognition
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of California San Diego men's basketball student-athletes Chris Hansen and Christian Bayne have earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District honors as the organization announced its regional selections Monday.
Hansen was named to the NABC All-West District First Team, while Bayne was named to the second team.
Hansen has collected several major accolades this season including California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year, Division II Conference Commissioner's Association All-West Region First Team, All-CCAA First Team, and CCAA All-Tournament Team. In addition, he was listed on the first Bevo Francis Watch List of the season, which included the top 100 candidates for the best player in small college basketball.
A redshirt junior center, Hansen led UC San Diego in scoring (14.6), rebounding (8.1), field goal percentage (54.4), and total blocks (37). In CCAA games, he led all conference players in rebounding (8.1) and free throw percentage (91.8) and was second in 3-point field goal percentage (48.4) and blocks per game (1.3) and sixth in scoring (14.6).
Hansen recorded 12 double-doubles and scored 20 or more points in nine games. He amassed his 1,000th career point and set UC San Diego single season records for rebounds (275) and blocks.
Hansen, who sat out the 2017-18 season following shoulder surgery, was an All-CCAA First Team pick in 2017 and the league's Freshman of the Year in 2016.
This season, Bayne was an All-CCAA First Team pick and the CCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player.
As a senior guard, Bayne led UC San Diego in 3-pointers (74), free throw percentage (92.8), steals (40), and minutes per game (31.7). He was second in scoring (14.4) and assists (94). Among CCAA players in conference games, Bayne ranked first in scoring (16.2) and field goal percentage (52.5) and was fourth in both 3-point percentage (44.3) and 3-pointers/game (2.5).
He established a new program record with 50 consecutive made free throws and a single season mark with 1,079 minutes played.
Hansen and Bayne helped UC San Diego to a 26-8 overall record and a 17-5 mark in the CCAA. The Tritons won their third-straight, fourth overall league tournament title and second overall regular season crown. They qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fifth time and were ranked as high as No. 6 in the country.
The NABC will announce its All-America selections on Tuesday, March 26.
