CHICO, Calif. - University of California San Diego basketball standout Chris Hansen has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Male Athlete of the Year. The announcement was made Wednesday by the conference.

A redshirt junior center, Hansen put together an incredible 2018-19 season, becoming the men's basketball program's first-ever NABC All-American at the NCAA Division II level. He was tabbed the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year and was a consensus all-region first team selection.

Hansen led the CCAA in rebounding and free throw percentage. He was second in 3-point field goal percentage, third in blocks, and sixth in scoring. For the Tritons, he was the team leader in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocks. Hansen set UC San Diego Division II single season records for rebounds and blocks. He recorded 12 double-doubles and netted 20 or more points nine times while also scoring his 1,000th career point.

"It’s great that Chris is being recognized for his performance this season," said head coach Eric Olen. "He is not only a talented athlete but also a terrific teammate, hard worker, and outstanding competitor."

Hansen helped UC San Diego to a 26-8 overall record and a 17-5 mark in CCAA action as the Tritons won conference regular season and tournament titles en route to playing in the NCAA West Regional for the fourth-straight year. The 26 wins were the second-most in program history and the 17 CCAA victories tied the team’s most. The Tritons set all-time program records for single season points, field goals, 3-pointers, and free throw percentage as well as 3-pointers in a single game.

Hansen's accomplishments were made more impressive by the fact that he sat out the entire 2017-18 campaign following shoulder surgery.

"Chris has had a tremendous impact on our program," said Olen. "He's helped our team to some of the most successful seasons in school history while contributing to the culture of our entire program with his positive attitude and work ethic. Hopefully our team can build on the success of this season and Chris can finish his career with another outstanding performance next year."

Hansen, who hails from Lafayette, Calif., is a Management Science major in UC San Diego's Sixth College.

Hansen is the sixth scholar-athlete and second male from UC San Diego to be named CCAA Athlete of the Year since the institution joined the conference prior to the 2000-01 academic year.
