Tritons Selected to Repeat as CCAA Champions
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's basketball team has once again been picked first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released by the conference on Monday.
UC San Diego received 143 total points and 11 of 13 first-place votes from the league's head coaches. This marks the second consecutive season in which the Tritons have been selected first in the survey.
Last season, UC San Diego won a share of the regular season CCAA crown for the second time in three years, and captured their third consecutive CCAA tournament title. The Tritons posted a 26-8 record en route to an appearance in the NCAA Division II West Regional semifinals.
The year’s squad returns four starters including redshirt senior All-American Chris Hansen. Last year’s CCAA Player of the Year, Hansen averaged 14.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. In addition to Hansen, guards Tyrell Roberts and Mikey Howell, and forward Scott Everman return. Roberts was last year’s CCAA Newcomer of the Year, averaging better than 14 points per game. Howell led the Tritons in assists, finishing third in the conference in assist/turnover ratio at 2.3. Everman contributed 9.5 points while finishing second on the team in blocked shots behind Hansen. Also returning to the floor for UC San Diego is redshirt senior Christian Oshita, who was leading the team in scoring at 19.5 points per game before he was sidelined with a season-ending shoulder injury.
Cal Poly Pomona, last year's regular season co-champion, placed second in the CCAA poll with 134 points and two first-place votes. Cal State East Bay was picked to finish third with 110 points, Cal State San Bernardino was fourth with 97 points, and Cal State LA rounded out the top five, earning 96 points. Following in order were Stanislaus State, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State LA, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State Dominguez Hills, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay, Humboldt State, and Cal State Monterey Bay.
UC San Diego opens its 2019-20 campaign by taking part in the CCAA/GNAC Challenge, hosted by Western Washington Nov. 8-9. The Tritons home opener will take place Nov. 19 inside RIMAC Arena against Point Loma Nazarene.
The Tritons' CCAA slate begins Nov. 21 in La Jolla as they host Cal State San Marcos. All UC San Diego home basketball games will air live on ESPN3.
