SAN MARCOS, Calif. - UC San Diego's Heidi VanDerveer was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, while junior forward Dalayna Sampton was tabbed the league's Newcomer of the Year as the conference announced its annual awards Thursday night at Cal State San Marcos.

Additionally, Sampton and senior guard Beth Mounier were All-CCAA First Team selections, while senior forward Cassie MacLeod was placed on the second team and sophomore guard Joleen Yang picked up honorable mention.

VanDerveer earned the honor for the second time in her career, and second-straight year, after receiving the award for the 2015-16 season. In her fifth year at the helm, she led the Tritons to a 23-7 overall record and the regular season conference title with a 17-3 mark in CCAA play. Sampton, a transfer from Hawai’i, was named Newcomer of the Year and grabbed All-CCAA First Team honors. The Vallejo product recorded three double-doubles, 21 steals and 21 blocks this season. She averages 10.4 points per game and leads the team in total rebounds with 207 and field goal percentage (.552). Mounier was also placed on the first team after leading the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game, three-point field goals (59), assists (68) and steals (23). The Woodland Hills native has the second-best free throw percentage in the CCAA (.873) and is fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game averaging 2.4. Mounier earned All-CCAA second-team honors in 2015-16.

MacLeod earned second-team accolades, averaging 10 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She is second on the team in total rebounds (191), steals (22), rebounds per game (7.1) and shooting percentage (.429). The Agoura Hills native scored 30 points, a season high for UCSD, against Cal Poly Pomona this season. It is the first time MacLeod has earned All-CCAA honors.

Yang received honorable mention after finishing fourth in the CCAA in free throw percentage (.868) and has an assist-turnover ratio of 1.3, fifth highest in the league. The San Francisco product averages 9.3 points per game and has tallied 63 assists.

In total, 20 players were placed on All-CCAA teams. Eleven student-athletes were honorable mention. Cal State East Bay’s Shomari Harris was awarded Player of the Year and Humboldt State’s Tyra Turner took home Freshman of the Year.

Top-seeded UCSD faces fourth-seeded Stanislaus State in a CCAA Tournament semifinal at The Sports Center in San Marcos on Friday, March 3, at noon. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship game to take on either No. 2 Cal State East Bay or No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona.
