SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Beth Mounier and Dalayna Sampton scored 20 points apiece as the top-seeded University of California San Diego women's basketball team defeated No. 4 Stanislaus State, 82-67, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament semifinal Friday at The Sports Center.
UC San Diego (23-5) advances to the tourney championship game on Saturday, March 4 at 5 p.m. and will face second-seeded Cal State East Bay.
Sampton added 11 rebounds to her career-high point total for her fourth double-double of the season. A transfer from the University of Hawai'i, the 2017 CCAA Newcomer of the Year was 9-for-15 shooting and had two assists, two blocks and a steal.
A 2017 All-CCAA First Team selection, Mounier was 6-for-16 from the field with three three-pointers. Her stat line also included a career-best eight assists as well as six rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes of playing time.
UCSD shot 48 percent (29-61) for the game and held a 44-35 advantage in rebounding. The Tritons turned the ball over 17 times, leading to 18 points for the Warriors.
Stanislaus State (16-15) was led by Cassidy Sanders-Curry, who finished with 17 points and eight boards. Ana Burch had 14 points while Reana Hardin and Lizzy Alexander each totaled nine. Alexander made good on three treys.
Overall, the Warriors shot 38 percent (23-61) and had nine steals.
A MacLeod three-pointer at the 8:00 mark of the first quarter put the Tritons up 5-3 and they led the rest of the way. Their largest lead of the game was 21 on two occasions, last coming with 46 seconds left in the contest when they were ahead by a score of 82-61.
It was the third win for UCSD over Stan State this year. During the regular season, the Tritons won 68-55 in Turlock and 69-63 in La Jolla.
Cal State East Bay (21-8) earned a spot in Saturday's championship game with a 75-63 win over Cal Poly Pomona in Friday's second semifinal. The Tritons and Pioneers split a two-game regular season series earlier in the year.
The Tritons won their first, and only, CCAA Tournament title in 2013.
