STANFORD, Calif. - Seniors Dalayna Sampton and Paige Song each tallied eight points as the University of California San Diego women’s basketball team dropped a 60-46 decision to Stanford in an exhibition Saturday afternoon at Maples Pavilion. It marked the third time that the Tritons’ Heidi VanDerveer squared off against her sister Tara VanDerveer as head coaches.

The Tritons shot 26.9 percent overall (17-63) and 31.8 percent (7-22) from behind the three-point line. UCSD held a 42-39 in rebounds, grabbing 22 defensively.

“It was a great experience for our team,” said UCSD's VanDerveer. “We played in an exciting environment against an excellent team. We had some very good stretches of defense and we had some really good offensive possessions”.

Junior Kayla Soto had nine rebounds while Sampton tallied six to go along with two blocks. Soto and senior Taylor Tanita each dished out three assists.

Alanna Smith was Stanford’s leading scorer, netting 13 points, while Maya Dodson grabbed seven boards and Marta Sniezek had seven assists. As a team, the Cardinal shot 38.9 percent (23-59) from the floor and 16 percent (4-25) from behind the arc.

Stanford raced out to an 8-0 lead before Soto made a three-pointer to put UCSD on the board. Junior Shandiin Armao made a layup followed by a free throw from sophomore Sydney Sharp as the Tritons only trailed by four, 10-6, after the first quarter.

A jumper followed by two made free throws from Sampton tied the game at 17 with 2:31 remaining in the second quarter. Stanford scored four unanswered points to take a slight 21-17 lead into halftime.

The Cardinal went on a 10-point run to begin the third quarter and remained in control for the rest of the frame, outscoring the Tritons 21-9.

UCSD outscored Stanford 20-18 in the fourth quarter. Sharp made two three-pointers while Song added one. The Tritons went on an eight-point run down the stretch to close the gap and make it a 14-point game.

“I was really pleased with our effort and our grit,” said VanDerveer. “We will learn from this game and work hard to continue to improve individually and collectively”.
