AZUSA, Calif. -The University of California San Diego women’s basketball team fell to Seattle Pacific Saturday by a score of 65-59 to conclude action at the West Region Crossover Classic, hosted by Azusa Pacific.
The Tritons suffer their first loss and are now 3-1 on the season. SPU improves to a perfect 4-0 overall.
Junior Joleen Yang led UCSD with 17 points, shooting 55.5 percent (5-9) from behind the arc and 50.0 percent (6-12) overall. Junior Kayla Sato had a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior Dalayna Sampton had a team-best 15 boards on the night, while senior Taylor Tanita dished out five assists.
As a team, the Tritons shot 34.9 percent (22-63) overall and 36.4 (8-22) from three-point range. UCSD held SPU to 33.9 percent (21-62) in shooting and out-rebounded the Falcons 49-37.
SPU’s Jordan McPhee tallied a game-high 21 points while teammate Courtney Hollander gabbed 10 rebounds.
"I was proud of our team's effort," said UC San Diego head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We competed together and gave ourselves a tremendous opportunity to earn a win. It was great to have JoJo (Yang) back in the mix".
The Falcons led 23-15 at the end of the first as McPhee put up eight points and Hollander had five.
The Tritons got within three, 36-33, with 3:00 minutes left in the second quarter after a three-pointer from Yang. SPU’s Carly Ratausk made a jumper before junior Shandiin Armao scored as UCSD trailed 38-35 at halftime.
Yang made two three-pointers in the third frame, bringing the Tritons within one, 50-49, with 30 seconds left. SPU answered with a three-pointer from Jaylee Albert to carry a four-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
A seven-point run to start the fourth gave UCSD its only lead of the game. Sampton had three points in the stretch. However, the Falcons answered, scoring 10 unanswered points to retake the lead and ultimately seal the win. Yang made another three with under a minute to play but it wasn’t enough.
For her efforts, Sampton was named to the West Region Crossover Classic All-Tournament Team, averaging 12.5 points and 13.5 rebounds over two games. It is the second-straight year that Sampton has earned the honor.
Next week, the Tritons host the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic for the eighth-consecutive year. UC San Diego will play Dominican on Friday, Nov. 24 at 5:00 p.m. and Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 3:00 p.m.
