UC San Diego Opens Thanksgiving Classic With 75-57 Win Over Dominican

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore Mikayla Williams had 16 points as the University of California San Diego women’s basketball team cruised to a 75-57 victory over Dominican on the first day of the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic, Friday at RIMAC Arena.

Winning its home-opener for the third straight season, UC San Diego improves to 4-1 overall. DUC drops to 3-2 on the season.

UCSD shot 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor and 28.6 percent (6-21) from behind the arc and limited the Penguins to 33.9 percent in shooting on field goals. DUC went 35.7 percent (5-14) on three-pointers. The Tritons continued to dominate the boards, outrebounding the visitors, 58-31.

Williams completed her fourth double-double of the season adding 11 rebounds to go along with her 16 points. Junior Rebecca Williams and senior Dalayna Sampton scored 12 points apiece.

Sandra Ikeora and Natalie Diaz were the Penguins’ leading scorers with 17 and 13 points, respectively.

UCSD lead from the start, opening up the first quarter on a four-point run. Juniors Joleen Yang and Marcella Hughes gave the hosts an eight-point leading after scoring a three-pointer each.

A layup from Rebecca Williams followed by a layup from Mikayla Williams gave UCSD a 13-point lead, its largest of the half, with 4:09 remaining in the second quarter. Mikayla Williams went 5-7 from the floor, scoring 10 points in the frame as the Tritons took a 37-28 lead into the locker room.

UCSD broke open its lead in the second half, outscoring DUC 38-29. The Tritons limited the Penguins to only eight points in the fourth quarter. Rebecca Williams and sophomore Sydney Sharp each tallied eight points in the second half.

In the first game of the day, No. 17 Azusa Pacific came from behind to defeat Cal State San Marcos by a score of 84-69. APU’s Abbigail Goodsell Casey Wortley and led in scoring with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

The UCSD Thanksgiving Classic concludes on Saturday, Nov. 25. The first matchup with feature Cal State San Marcos against Dominican at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Tritons facing No. 17 Azusa Pacific at 3:00 p.m.
