UC San Diego Upends Cal State LA, 60-56 in Overtime
Release: Sunday 12/17/2017

LOS ANGELES - The University of California San Diego women's basketball team outscored Cal State LA 10-6 in overtime to win 60-56 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup Sunday in Los Angeles.

With the win, UC San Diego improves to 8-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play. The Tritons remain as the only undefeated team in the CCAA and stay in first place in the conference standings.

CSULA falls to 4-8 on the season and 3-3 in the CCAA.

"We are very excited to come away with the win tonight," said head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We struggled offensively throughout the game. If you look at the percentages and the score, I thought our defense really won us the game, and we made some big plays down the stretch."

UCSD trailed by two, 50-48, in the final seconds of regulation before Dalayna Sampton took an inbounds pass from fellow senior Taylor Tanita and made a layup with about three ticks left to send the game into overtime. Sampton put UCSD on the board first, netting a layup, early in the overtime frame. Junior Joleen Yang made a three-pointer that gave the Tritons a four-point lead, before the Golden Eagles cut it to two, 55-53. UCSD made back-to-back baskets before Tanita added a free throw five seconds from the end to seal the win.

Sampton finished with a career-high 27 points while also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, earning her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Mikayla Williams tallied 10 points while Yang went 3-of-6 from behind the arc and finished with nine points. Tanita and junior Kayla Sato combined for 13 assists and just one turnover, as UCSD registered 21 assists on 24 made field goals.

"Dalayna was a workhorse for us tonight," said VanDerveer. "I thought our guards, Taylor Tanita, Joleen Yang and Kayla Sato got good shots, but just didn't convert. We got good production from Rebecca Williams, and Shandiin Armao played really well on defense. This is a tough place to play, but we made plays down the stretch that led us to the win."

The Golden Eagles were led by Rikke Fabricius and Mackenzie Barnes who each pitched in 13 points.

As a team, the Tritons shot 38.1 percent (24-63) overall and held the hosts to 35 percent (21-60) from the floor. UCSD held a 44-38 advantage in rebounds.

CSULA jumped out to a six-point lead in the first quarter thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Barnes and Fabricius. The Tritons went on a seven-point run in the final two minutes to take a 15-14 edge into the second frame. Yang made a three-pointer to put UCSD back in the lead.

The hosts outscored the Tritons 13-9 in the second quarter, taking a 27-24 advantage into halftime. Sampton netted four points and grabbed two rebounds.

Cal State LA maintained the lead throughout the third frame, but never gaining more than a three-point advantage. Sampton made a jumper with 1:18 left in the quarter as UCSD trailed by one, 37-36, heading into the fourth.

The Golden Eagles opened up the fourth quarter outscoring the Tritons 11-3, taking a nine-point advantage, 48-39. However, the Tritons answered, going on an eight-point run, spurred by a huge five-point possession with a Mikayla Williams layup following a CSULA foul on Yang's three-pointer, to make it a 48-47 game with 2:26 left on the clock. CSULA tried to pull away, but Sampton sent the game into overtime.

UC San Diego travels to second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-4, 5-1 CCAA) for a key conference matchup this Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 19, at 1:30 p.m.
