Sampton Nets Second CCAA Player of the Week Honor
SAN RAMON, Calif. - Dalayna Sampton of the University of California San Diego women's basketball team has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week for the second time this season. The conference announced its selections Tuesday.
Sampton led UC San Diego to its fourth-straight conference win on Sunday. The Tritons remain atop the CCAA standings as the only undefeated team in conference play with a perfect 4-0 record.
Scoring a career-high 27 points, Sampton helped UCSD win a 60-56 road decision over Cal State LA in overtime. The Vallejo product tallied a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with two assists and a steal. Sampton received an inbounds pass from senior Taylor Tanita with three seconds left in regulation and made a layup to tie the game. She followed that with a basket to open the scoring in overtime.
The senior forward shot 57.1 percent (12-21) from the field and committed no turnovers in 38 minutes of play. She currently leads the Tritons in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. On the season, she has 142 points and is shooting 52.8 percent.
Sampton also earned the honor on Nov. 28.
UC San Diego (8-2, 4-0 CCAA) plays Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-4, 5-1 CCAA) later Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Carson.
