CARSON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's basketball team secured its fifth-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win with a 73-63 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday at the Torodome.
With a perfect conference record of 5-0, UC San Diego maintains its spot at the top of the CCAA standings. The Tritons improve to 9-2 overall. CSUDH, which entered the contest tied for second with a chance to overtake UCSD, dropped to 7-5 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.
Four Tritons scored in double digits, with senior Dalayna Sampton, named earlier in the day as the CCAA Player of the Week for the second time, netting a team-high 19. Juniors Kayla Sato and Joleen Yang, and redshirt sophomore Mikayla Williams, tallied 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
UCSD shot an impressive 50 percent, finishing 28-of-56 overall, while keeping the Toros to 31.9 percent (23-72). The Tritons made five three-pointers and led the game in rebounds, 45-37, thanks in large part to a career-high 17 boards from Sampton.
Dominguez Hills was led by Nautica Morrow, who netted a game-high 24 points. Taylor Farris notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tritons got off to a quick start, using a 10-point run in the first quarter to go up 17-5. During the stretch, senior Paige Song and Yang each made a three-pointer while Sampton tallied two layups. UCSD shot 60 percent (9-15), taking a 13-point advantage into the second quarter at 21-8.
UCSD grabbed its largest lead of the game in the second quarter, going up by 19 points, 32-13, with 5:04 left in the half. The Toros stormed back, outscoring the Tritons 11-2 down the stretch to make it a 10-point game, 34-24, heading into the locker rooms.
UCSD held a 22-20 advantage in the third quarter despite Dominguez Hills bringing the game within two, 38-36, with seven minutes remaining. The Tritons used a nine-point run, punctuated by a clutch Song triple, to take a 56-44 lead into the fourth.
The Toros outscored the Tritons 19-17 in the fourth frame, but it wasn't enough as UCSD cruised to the 10-point victory. Sampton scored six points in the quarter to secure her fifth double-double of the season.
Fifth-year senior Taylor Tanita, who paces the CCAA in total assists, dished out eight more to lead all players. Her five points, all from the line, served as the Tritons' last five of the afternoon. Junior Shandiin Armao contributed season highs of eight points and six rebounds in just 14 minutes off the bench.
UC San Diego takes a short break from action over the holidays and returns to the court on Friday, Dec. 29, at 5:30 p.m., hosting San Francisco State at RIMAC Arena.
