Sampton, Williams Lift Tritons Past San Francisco State, 80-63

SAN FRANCISCO — The duo of senior forward Dalayna Sampton and sophomore forward Mikayla Williams powered the UC San Diego women’s basketball team to a road victory over San Francisco State, 80-63, on Saturday night at The Swamp.

Sampton, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Meanwhile, Williams recorded 21 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Junior guard Joleen Yang added 12 points with four assists, Junior Kayla Sato had nine points, three rebounds and three assists, and senior guard Taylor Tanita tallied seven assists.

UC San Diego (19-3, 15-1 CCAA) maintains its four-game lead atop the conference standings, and has now won 15 of its last 16 games overall and eight straight against San Francisco State (5-15, 3-14). The Tritons haven’t loss to the Gators since March 1, 2013.

Just like the previous night against Sonoma State, the Tritons built separation in the second quarter by outscoring the Gators in the period, 28-14.

“In the first five minutes we didn’t have a great presence, but we picked it up after that,” said UC San Diego head coach Heidi VanDerveer. “We got into a better flow and offensive rhythm, and when we’re able to dominate inside, we’re really good.”

Yang’s 3-pointer from the wing in transition ignited UCSD’s second-quarter flurry, and sophomore Stephanie Moore’s assist to Williams inside followed by Moore’s 3-pointer from the corner extended the Tritons’ lead to 33-24 with 4:07 left in the first half.

Tanita followed it up with another three from nearly the same spot to push the lead to 12. Williams sank a jumper from the free-throw line, then sprinted the length of the floor and scored off an assist from Yang while being fouled hard to make it 47-33 at halftime.

Another three by Yang followed by sophomore Marcella Hughes’ driving layup put the Tritons ahead, 60-48, with 1:59 left in the third quarter. Sato’s open three from the top of the key extended the Tritons lead to 13, and Sampton’s sweeping turnaround hook shot with time running out in the third quarter put UC San Diego ahead 65-50 heading into the fourth.

Rachael Iozzia scored 21 points to lead San Francisco State, while Jhaina Stephens finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Tritons now prepare for a big week ahead, as UC San Diego plays host to second-place Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Feb. 9, followed by a road contest against Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Feb. 10.
