LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of California San Diego women’s basketball head coach Heidi VanDerveer will be a guest speaker at the USA Basketball Coach Academy on Saturday, May 5, at Sage Hill High School in Newport Beach, Calif.
It is the first stop of the academy in 2018, which will also be held in Chicago, Las Vegas, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Atlanta and Houston.
The USA Basketball Coach Academy strives to give valuable insight and education to basketball coaches and administrators of all levels. Academy sessions show coaches the USA Basketball curriculum for proper skill development to teach young players of all ages and ability. Guest speakers share knowledge of basketball and leadership both on and off the court.
VanDerveer, who is heading into her seventh season as head coach at UC San Diego, will provide her thoughts on understanding your team as well as helping your team be successful and reach its full potential.
“USA Basketball is the world standard, not just the growth of the game, but also as a platform for an outstanding product,” said VanDerveer. “From the Olympic Team to the National Team to clinics like this, it’s a great way to share information and grow the game, which is the goal.”
Other guest speakers expected to be in attendance include Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Miles Simon, University of Pittsburgh men’s assistant coach Kevin Sutton, former Los Angeles Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin Eastman among others.
VanDerveer noted even she plans to learn a lot from other coaches and guest speakers.
“Going to clinics are a great way to learn,” she said. “It’s going to be fun to talk about a great game and exchange ideas with some very knowledgeable coaches.”
UC San Diego is coming off another successful season under VanDerveer in 2017-18, as the Tritons finished 28-5 overall with a 21-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play en route to an appearance in the NCAA West Region semifinals.
VanDerveer was named CCAA Coach of the Year for the third-consecutive season and also received Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Region 8 Coach of the Year honors.
In addition to her collegiate and WNBA experience, VanDerveer has worked with USA Basketball as a scout for the 2006 World Championships team, as well as the 2008 Olympic team that won a gold medal in Beijing.
