Mikayla Williams Named CCAA Player of the Week, SDSA Star of the Month

UC San Diego

SAN RAMON, Calif. — University of California San Diego junior forward Mikayla Williams has been named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

It is the third time this season Williams has earned player of the week honors and the fifth time in her career. In addition, Williams was selected as a San Diego Sports Association Star of the Month for December, which is the second time she garnered the award in 2018.

The Meath Park, Sask., native powered the Tritons to a home win and two road victories last week, as well as a 5-0 record in the month of December, as UC San Diego remained undefeated.

Williams averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and 3.3 assists during the recent three-game stretch, starting with a 20-point, 17-rebound performance against Sonoma State to close out the 2018 calendar year on Dec. 31.

The junior forward followed it up by posting a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and four assists in a comeback win over Cal State LA on Jan. 3, and finished with 21 points and six rebounds in a victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 5 to eclipse 1,000 career points.

A first-team all-conference selection last season, Williams leads the CCAA in scoring (20.2 ppg), field-goal percentage (.561), free-throw percentage (.840) and is second in rebounding (10.9 rpg) in 2018-19. Nationally, Williams ranks 23rd in points per contest and 18th in rebounds per game.

UC San Diego (13-0, 9-0 CCAA) has moved up in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Coaches’ Poll to No. 6, the program’s highest ranking since being No. 1 in the nation during the 2011-12 season.

The Tritons return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, as they hit the road to take on Stanislaus State beginning at 5:30 p.m.
