Mikayla Williams Named SDSA Star of the Month for January
SAN DIEGO — University of California San Diego women’s basketball junior forward Mikayla Williams was named a San Diego Sports Association Star of the Month for January, the association announced on Monday.
Williams averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds during the month while shooting 59 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free-throw, leading the undefeated Tritons to a 7-0 mark with five victories on the road.
The seven-game stretch was highlighted by a 24-point performance in a 68-67 double-overtime home victory against Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 19, as Williams also recorded career highs of 18 rebounds and six blocks.
The Meath Park, Sask., native posted 23 points and 14 rebounds in a win at Humboldt State on Jan. 26, and recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds in a road victory over Stanislaus State on Jan. 12.
For the season, Williams leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 19.9 points per game and averages 10.9 rebounds, while shooting a conference-best .572 percent from the field. The junior forward has been named CCAA Player of the Week three times this season.
No. 2 UC San Diego (20-0, 16-0 CCAA) resumes action this week with two home games, as the Tritons take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, Feb. 14, and Cal State LA on Saturday, Feb. 16. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m. at RIMAC Arena.
