SAN RAMON, Calif. - University of California San Diego sophomore winger Maddy Samilo was named Tuesday morning as the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Player of the Week of the 2018 season.
The Rancho Bernardo product and graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School is a first-time honoree.
Samilo started both of UC San Diego's matches on the right side of midfield, and tallied a pair of late game-winners to get the Tritons out to a perfect 2-0 start.
On Thursday afternoon at Concordia Irvine, favored for third in the Pacific West Conference (PacWest) and a team that went 6-1-1 at home a year ago, Samilo's initial shot attempt of the year was the decider at 86:23 as UC San Diego overturned a 1-0 halftime deficit to win, 2-1.
In Saturday's home opener against then-seventh-ranked rival Western Washington, Samilo notched the lone goal of the contest at the 84:00 mark, sprinting into the penalty area on fellow sophomore Caitlin McCarthy's (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) through pass, and putting a mesmerizing body fake on Viking goalie Natalie Dierickx before tapping into the open net.
Samilo totaled four shots, with the two on goal, over 110 minutes for the opening week.
UC San Diego (2-0) is right back in action tonight, beginning a three-match road trip on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu, at Hawai'i Pacific. Kickoff at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park in Waipahu, Hawai'i, is set for 6 p.m. PT (3 p.m. HT). The Sharks (0-1) were picked to place eighth in the PacWest preseason poll.
The Tritons' two wins moved them up from No. 5 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, to No. 2 in Tuesday's first in-season installment.
