UC San Diego Picks Up Second Straight United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award

UC San Diego

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of California San Diego women's soccer program is a repeat recipient of the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award, as announced on Wednesday morning.

The awards recognize a total of 167 high school and college men's and women's teams across the country for exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game during the 2018 fall season.

The Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award is given to United Soccer Coaches members at four levels. Teams honored at the platinum level went an entire season without a player or coach receiving a yellow card or red card. Teams honored at the gold (1-10%), silver (11-30%) and bronze (31-50%) levels are based on a percentage calculated by the total number of yellow cards received by players and coaches, divided by the team's total number of games played. A team may not have received any red cards during the regular season or postseason.

UC San Diego garnered the Silver Award for the second year in succession, on the basis of collecting just three yellow cards over its 24 matches (12.5%).

Of the 167 teams recognized, 104 were from the college ranks, with 100 on the women's side and four on the men's, the latter all at the bronze level. UC San Diego was one of three NCAA Division II West Region and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) representatives, joined by the Sonoma State women at the silver level and Cal Poly Pomona women at the bronze.

National semifinalist UC San Diego completed its stellar 2018 campaign with a 19-3-2 record, as the CCAA regular-season, CCAA Tournament and West Region treble winner for the second straight year. The Tritons were ranked third in the final United Soccer Coaches poll, their highest finish since being No. 2 in 2012 as national runners-up.
